The name Grünerløkka is derived from the green meadows which used to cover the area. The meadows were located along the Akerselva river, which was once a major source of power for industry in Oslo.

A neighborhood in Oslo, Norway, is called Grünerlkka. In 1858, Grünerlkka was annexed to Oslo (then Christiania). Grünerlkka was once a working-class neighborhood, but it has been increasingly gentrified since the late twentieth century. Even though it is in the East End, the prices there are higher than elsewhere. It costs more than other areas of the East End.

It is bounded by the Akerselva river to the east, and by the streets Bogstadveien, Ullevålsveien, Birkelunden and St. Hanshaugen park to the west, south and north, respectively.
