The Tailor Metaphore

“Delving into a website project can have an almost endless amount of options, as when you are working with digital design almost every aspect can be custom designed and changed, every background, every image, every font and button, navigation and element can have 10 or 100 ways to to be created and changed. Digital and graphic design is by nature a very custom process, if you compare to for example a custom tailor or a high end restaurant, you can maybe change or combine a set of elements when creating a “custom shirt”, but the end result and process will be 80% to 90% based on existing elements and templates such as pre-made fabric, pocket templates, pre-made collars, existing buttons, predefined cuts and patterns and so on.

The Restaurant Metaphor

In a high end restaurant as well you might be able to pick and chose from a set menu, but you are rarely or never invited into the actual kitchen to work “together with the chef” on your meal. However working with a graphic and web designer you are invited directly into the studio where the designer is working hands on your custom project, and you are truly “inside the kitchen” with your designer. I the designer will try to make the process effective and as smooth as possible for you the client. 01 Scope & Discovery

The client and the designer will discuss the web design and website in terms of what platforms are suited if it is needed with a custom design phase first in Figma and a custom build or if we can rely on a more effective no-code process where we design and build the website directly in Squarespace

02 Chose Your Style & Reference

There are many styles to chose from when working with Graphic and Web Design, I have selected and chosen two main categories for you the client to chose from when working with me, Eivind Holum, I can do more styles, but these are my main selections and 80% of my projects and client work falls within one of these two style categories. 03 Content, assets text and images

Web design and graphic design consists in its essence of images (that the web designer did not take) and text that the web designer did not write) and of layout, fonts, colours, space, animations and hierarchy of information which the web designer creates and sets up for the client. Graphic and web design is a collaboration between client and designer. An important note is that the client will need to deliver as much content, text and images to the designer as possible at the start of the project, The text does not need to be finished and the designer can supply and help with finding more mages from for example Unsplash.com or Pexels.com but the text will come from te client and it will be hard or near impossible to create a good website if the client does not deliver enough text. I will therefore urge you the client to deliver as much text as possible upon the beginning of the project.

04 It Begins! We Embark on The Design Process

When a style has been selected and a reference website has been chosen, as well as text has been delivered from client, the design process starts for full. You can expect to receive a design delivered back within 7 days of delivering the text to me te designer. When the design is ready you will be sent the design as its ready for presentation and your inspection and revision.

05 Iteration → Completion

After the design process has been presented and we enter revision, iteration and aim for completion, if you want several iterations and revisions the price, scope and timeline of your project can go up, however in most cases we will stay within te original allocated budget. When the design is approved your site can go live and be connected with domain and DNS settings.
